Brass Bands in the Burrell

On Wednesday, March 5th, five Brass Bands from across Cornwall gathered at the Burrell Theatre, Truro School to showcase the pieces they will perform at the upcoming West of England Brass Band Championships. Much like football, Brass Bands are categorized into leagues from Section 4 to Championship. The capacity audience at the Burrell enjoyed performances from bands across all sections.

Coordinated by Gareth Churcher of CMST and Truro School (who is also the Musical Director of Camborne Town Band), the event provided the ensembles an opportunity to “try out” their respective music in front of a critically friendly audience and perform in a different acoustic environment than their usual rehearsal spaces. Despite the intense performances, the atmosphere was relaxed, with refreshments served by the Truro School events team, who took great care of the participants.

Gareth Churcher remarked, “This was such a good opportunity for the Bands to perform, socialise, and hear each other, which sadly doesn’t happen too often. The Burrell is an excellent space with an honest acoustic that allows the performers and audience to really hear all the details of the music. The event was a real success and something we hope to build on next year, welcoming a whole new community to Truro School.”

The Brass Bands attending were:
Pendennis Brass – 4th Section
Stythians – 3rd Section
St Keverne – 2nd Section
Lanner – 1st Section
Camborne Town Band – Championship Section

I wish to say a massive thank you for the help and support we were given. Everyone looked after us splendidly and without a doubt a good time was had by all. The facilities were excellent and the evening a great success, please take a deal of the credit for that outcome.
