First Look Inside Truro School’s New Music Centre as Landmark Cornwall Venue Nears Completion

A first look inside Truro School’s new Music Centre has been unveiled as the landmark development enters its final stages of internal fit-out.

The purpose-built facility, one of the most significant recent investments in music education and cultural infrastructure in Cornwall, brings together rehearsal, teaching, recording and performance spaces under one roof. Alongside the refurbishment of the school’s historic Assembly Hall, the project creates a major new destination for music, education and events in the county.

Designed to support musicians of all ages and abilities, the new Music Centre includes purpose-built rehearsal rooms for ensembles and orchestras, an expanded range of specialist practice rooms, a fully soundproofed rehearsal studio for rock, jazz and percussion groups, dedicated electronic music production and recording facilities, teaching classrooms and flexible collaborative spaces.

The ground-floor performance space has been designed with a dedicated reception and foyer, allowing it to host rehearsals, recitals and intimate performances while also supporting community partnerships throughout the year.

Andy Johnson, Head of Truro School, said:

“Seeing the spaces come to life is incredibly exciting for everyone involved in the project. We are immensely proud that this development will benefit not only Truro School pupils, but also the wider Cornwall community through partnerships, performances and shared musical experiences for generations to come.”

The Music Centre has been developed in partnership with Cornwall Music Service Trust and with the support of the Roseland Music Society, reflecting a shared ambition to strengthen music education and widen access to creative opportunities across Cornwall.

Alongside its educational purpose, the development also significantly enhances the school’s ability to host cultural and business events.

The refurbished Assembly Hall provides a flexible venue with seating for 798 guests and a maximum capacity of 900 people. Designed as a multi-purpose space, it is capable of accommodating theatre productions, concerts, conferences, exhibitions, trade shows, awards evenings and a wide range of public and corporate events. Since opening, the venue has already welcomed a number of events, providing an early glimpse of its potential as one of Cornwall’s leading spaces for large-scale gatherings.

Its scale places it among the larger indoor venues in Cornwall, offering organisations an additional option for conferences, performances and large gatherings in Truro.
