TEDxTruro Welcomed to the Burrell Theatre

On Friday, we welcomed TEDxTruro to the Burrell Theatre for their first event of 2025. The event is designed to inspire conversation and support the business community across Cornwall.

The event welcomed guests to listen to six fascinating speakers from the Cornish business community, with organisers Jason, Grant and Craig coming together for the first time to host a TEDx Event in Truro. The team aspires to host more events across the city, with this very much being an introduction to what is to come for the brand.

Jason said, “Truro has a lot to offer, and local people need a platform for us to grow and support each other. TEDxTruro offers just that. We are showcasing the diverse, cultural talent that Cornwall has to offer. Today we hope to show local people our vision for our community-led free events. We have plans to host large events on stage along the lines of today and also more intimate events. We are also discussing the possibility of a TEDxTruro Kids platform. We are working with lots of inspirational speakers, academics, and local business owners who believe in our vision. TEDx hosts 3,000 events a year worldwide, which are all self-organised and not-for-profit, and we have a passion for our local community and to bring a voice to Cornwall through these events”.

Friday’s speakers included: Fatma Sabet, a British-Egyptian academic specialising in social transitions towards health equity through a school meal social safety net; Naabil Khan a fourth-year medical student at the University of Exeter, striving for equality in healthcare; Kate Doran a creative business owner overcoming personal adversity that led to creative solutions; Sophie Lang, the co-founder of one of Cornwall’s largest independent property agencies, inspiring others to push forward in the face of fear; Des Bell, a local business leader and entrepreneur; and Joe Turnbull, a serial Cornwall 30 Under 30 Winner, who has been recognised as one of the emerging entrepreneurial talents in the region.

All 6 speakers held the audience’s attention and had them deep in thought throughout their presentations. With refreshments served within the Lilly Room for guests to network in during breaks, the Burrell Theatre was the perfect backdrop for the event. Jason commented that the venue was “perfect and met all of the business needs for the event, as well as having supportive staff throughout the process”.

The event was filmed by local videographers Bull and Wolf, with official still photography captured by LAN Studios. Alongside the organisers, volunteers Jessica, Daz, Becky and Richard helped to bring the event to life.

Footage of the speeches will soon be available through TEDx for anyone who missed it. Future opportunities can be found via the TedxTruro website HERE
