Exciting Progress on New Music Project

While our pupils have been enjoying a well-deserved summer break, the Classic Builders team has been hard at work bringing our ambitious new Music Project to life. Since the end of term, the building has been made watertight, with solar panels, internal walls, plumbing, electrics, and heat pumps all taking shape. The result is a striking structure that is already starting to reflect the vision we have for this extraordinary space.

Sustainability has been central to every aspect of the design and construction, and the entire build is BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) certified. The solar panels will enable the building to be Net Zero Carbon in operational terms, while high-performance insulation, triple-glazed windows, and soundproofing ensure efficiency and comfort.

One of the most exciting transformations is happening within the old Assembly Hall. By retaining its original structure, we are minimising the embodied carbon in construction, while giving the space a new lease of life. A new roof has been installed, sustainable timber windows are being fitted, and a mezzanine floor has been added to enhance functionality. The team is also recycling materials wherever possible, with plans to create a unique art installation from the hall’s original wooden flooring to honour its heritage. The space will eventually be transformed into a state-of-the-art 900-seat auditorium, offering unrivalled opportunities for music-making, drama, and large-scale school events.

Inside the Music Centre, bright, modern spaces are taking shape. The entrance hall will be a light-filled, welcoming space, which can transform into a box office and waiting area for performances and events, and will include a café. From here, pupils will access the new Music Centre, as well as the Art and Design Technology block beyond. The new classrooms are spacious and inspiring, featuring breakout rooms, one-to-one teaching suites, and dedicated office space for staff. It will also enable us to widen our support for the Cornwall Music Service Trust (CMST) and offer an exciting array of commercial and community hire services.

The project is on track for completion in summer 2026, with scaffolding expected to come down ahead of the October half term, allowing us to see the finished exterior and beautiful stonework. We hope to mark the official opening by celebrating Speech Day 2026 in the new auditorium. When completed, the Music Centre will be a hub for musical education and aspiration in Cornwall, enriching the musical landscape in the school, the city and beyond.

Thank you to James and his team for their exceptional work and for welcoming us on-site to witness this incredible transformation. We look forward to sharing further updates as we watch our Music Project come to life over the coming months.
