Exciting Development of Astro Sports Pitch

This week marks the start of an exciting new development project at Truro School, as work begins on the full resurfacing of the Astro pitch at The Sir Ben Ainslie Sports Centre. The upgraded facility will benefit both Truro School pupils and the wider sporting community who regularly use the centre.

In January 2026, the Governors of Truro School approved plans to replace the existing artificial sports pitch, which had reached the end of its lifespan. Working in partnership with We Are Verde, the school selected an FIH (Federation of International Hockey) accredited surface. We are proud to announce that this will become one of only a small number of certified FIH-approved pitches in Cornwall.

Over the past few days, the installation team has begun removing and recycling the old turf — no small task during the recent heatwave.

James Jenkins, Managing Director of We Are Verde, said: “The installation will be completed within six weeks and includes the removal and disposal of the existing carpet and shock pad, the installation of a new 15mm in-situ shock pad, and a new 18mm sand-dressed FIH-approved carpet manufactured in Belgium. The facility will also benefit from fencing modifications and new kick boards.”

We are looking forward to unveiling this exciting new facility to our community in the coming weeks. The investment will be especially welcomed by Truro Hockey Club, who are based at the sports centre and will be among the regular users of the newly upgraded pitch.
