Spratt and Winkle in the Library

Keen quilters from Hampshire have joined us for a wonderful creative week indulging in their hobby of sewing and seeing the sights of Cornwall.

Spratt and Winkle have joined us for the last two Easter breaks, to share their love of Cornwall and for the opportunity to work on individual sewing projects and taught group sessions – without the interruption of home life. The group have been accommodated in Trennick, whilst enjoying catering for breakfast and evening meals on site, around creating their wonderful makes in our light and spacious library.

In addition to using Truro School facilities, they have enjoyed trips out to local sewing shops, St Ives and Porthtowan, where they indulged in fish and chips for lunch. Shopping for fabrics in Cornwall’s many independent fabric shops, is the highlight for many attendees, with veteran Alison stating “I love this trip!”

The group are led by Chris and Lizzie, who said “The facilities at Truro School are exceptional, we would come more than once a year if we could! We have so much room for all of our equipment and enjoy walking into town to Truro Fabrics – although we don’t always enjoy the walk back up the hill again! We have been coming for a couple of years now, and really look forward to it – we have already booked up for next year. We are all working on projects such as quilting and making clothes and will be indulging in a lampshade making course as part of our stay. The accommodation and food have been excellent, along with Jo who has hosted us throughout all of our visits”.

The group have been working to their own schedule, with many staying up until 10pm to work on quilts. They were happy to show off their work – all which was to an exceptional skill level. The group supports each other with advice and tutorials, meeting twice a month at home for Saturday sewing sessions. The Cornwall retreat is the highlight of their yearly calendar –arriving with cars laden down with sewing machines, overlockers, irons and reems of beautiful fabrics! In addition to sewing, some members enjoy a swim on site in the mornings and walking around the school gardens after a busy day of creativity.

For those looking for facilities to host craft groups retreats of a similar fashion, we have various options available within the school grounds –  this includes a theatre and cookery school. The school campus is in easy walking distance of Truro city centre, with plenty of onsite parking, accommodation options, access to gym and leisure facilities and landscaped gardens. We look forward to seeing Spratt and Winkle again next year!
